Zamzam Water

The Story of the Well of Zamzam, the Source of Generosity and Blessing at the House (of worshiping) Allah

The Well of Zamzam, that sacred spot in the middle of the Mataf area (previously) east of the K’abah, stands as a proof of Allah’s mercy and kindness to His servants. Its history dates back to the time of Prophet Ismail (may Allah’s salam be upon him), when Ibrahim, (may Allah’s salam be upon him), left his wife Hajar and their son in a barren valley without vegetation or water. When Hajar asked Prophet Ibrahim, “Did Allah command you to do this?” he replied, “Yes,” and she responded with firm Iman, “Then He will not abandon us.”

As Hajar searched for water for her infant, running between Safa and Marwah, the angel Jibril (may Allah’s salam be upon him), struck the ground with his heel, causing the blessed waters of Zamzam to gush forth. Hajar started to contain the water and fill her vessel. Since then, this well has become a symbol of mercy of Allah and a refuge for pilgrims.

Names and Spiritual Significance of Zamzam

Zamzam has many names that reflect its greatness, including “The Thrust of Jibril,” “Healing of Illness,” and “Food for the Hungry,” highlighting its status as the best water on earth. The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him), described it as blessed, saying: “The best water on the face of the earth is Zamzam water; it is food that satisfies and a cure for sickness.”

Continued Care for Zamzam Water Over the centuries

The Well of Zamzam has seen continuous efforts for its care. In 1373 AH, King Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, modernized it by installing modern pumps and connecting twelve water outlets around the well, facilitating water extraction. In 1382 AH, during the reign of King Saud (may Allah have mercy upon him), the surrounding buildings were removed to expand the Mataf area, and the well was placed in a basement below the Mataf. This marked the end of using buckets, which were replaced by water outlets. In 1399 AH, King Khalid (may Allah have mercy upon him), ordered the well to be cleaned using the latest methods deploying experienced divers, resulting in an abundant flow of water. In 1424 AH, during the reign of King Fahd (may Allah have mercy upon him) studies for the Grand Mosque suggested covering the well’s entrances to provide more space for Tawaf and prayer.

Unique Properties and Fine Purification

Zamzam water is sourced from three rock fractures beneath the Ka’bah and flows through ancient rocks. To ensure the quality of the water, it is purified with ultraviolet rays without any chemicals, achieving a disinfection rate of 99.77% from bacteria and viruses, ensuring its complete purity and unique taste.

A Symbol of Mercy and Generosity

Zamzam is not just a well of water; it embodies Allah’s mercy and symbolises continuous generosity. It is a heavenly gift that quenches the spirits of believers and fills their hearts with faith. Through ongoing care for the well, Zamzam remains available to refresh the pilgrims of the House of Allah with pure water, just as it has for thousands of years.
